Louis Barruol, whom the Wine Spectator dubbed the "Genius of Gigondas", produces the benchmark wines of the small but spectacular South Rhône appellation. Vigneron and winemaker for the Château de Saint Cosme,owned by his family since 1570, he continues the tradition taken over from his father Henri in 1992. In addition to the estate-grown wines labeled "Château de Saint Cosme", he produces a range of negociant wines made from grapes purchased from the top growers in the Northern Rhône which are labeled simply"Saint Cosme".The grapes coming from some extraordinary parcels allow him to produce small but remarkable volumes of Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Condrieu.
Since 2014, he has been growing white grapes in Saint Martin - Principauté d'Orange IGP, directly across the Ouvèze River from Gigondas,labeling the wines as "Domaine de Saint Cosme". In the meantime, he also fulfilled his most ambitious dream to create a vineyard from zero. For this, he crossed the ocean and together with two American friends set up Forge Cellars creating a lot of buzz in the Finger Lakes, New York. His Riesling was loved by the critics from its very first vintage, in 2011 and the Pinot Noir is getting better and better each year. His winemaking techniques – using whole clusters as well as oak for vinifying and aging – were quite unknown in the Finger Lakes, so the wines generated a serious debate.
Louis Barruol scooped up a remarkable collection of prestigious awards and scores. Robert Parker has awarded his top wines 100 point scores on several occasions and in 2017 he ranked twice in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list: once for France and once for Finger Lakes - #5 for Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2015 and #31 for Forge Cellars Classique Riesling 2015.
Extremely voluble and energetic, Louis is as good a speaker as he is a winemaker. He loves playing rugby and classical music and therefore he likes to intrigue and incite, his presentations being a captivating display of erudition.

Robert Parker: ”Louis Barruol se află la apogeu de la sfârșitul anilor 1990, iar în ultimii ani face unele dintre cele mai bune vinuri din sudul Ronului și, totodată, din Franța.”
Louis Barruol, cel pe care Wine Spectator îl numește ”Geniul din Gigondas”, produce vinurile de referință ale micii, dar spectaculoasei apelațiuni din Ronul de Sud. Viticultor și oenolog al Château de Saint Cosme, domeniu aflat în proprietatea familiei sale de 15 generații, el continuă tradiția preluată de la tatăl său Henri în 1992. Pe lângă vinurile făcute din viile proprii și etichetate sub brandul “Château de Saint Cosme”, Louis produce și o gamă de vinuri de negociant, din struguri cumpărați de la viticultori consacrați din Ronul de Nord și etichetată ”Saint Cosme”. Strugurii proveniți din cîteva parcele extraordinare îi permit să producă volume mici, dar remarcabile de Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage sau Condrieu.
Din 2014, el cultivă struguri albi în via Saint Martin, apelațiunea “Principauté d’Orange”, iar vinurile sunt îmbuteliate sub brandul ”Domaine de Saint Cosme”. Între timp, și-a împlinit și visul cel mai ambițios, acela de a ridica o podgorie de la zero. Pentru aceasta, a trecut oceanul și, împreună cu doi prieteni americani, a înființat Forge Cellars, devenită rapid una dintre cele mai disputate podgorii din Fingers Lake, New York. Rieslingul produs aici a fost apreciat de critici chiar de la prima ediție, din 2011, iar Pinot Noir-ul este, din an în an, tot mai bun. Tehnicile sale de vinificare – folosirea strugurilor nedezciorchinați și a lemnului pentru vinificare și maturare – erau cvasi-necunoscute în Finger Lakes și au stârnit dezbateri aprinse.
Louis Barruol are o colecție remarcabilă de premii și punctaje prestigioase. Răsplătit de mai multe ori cu 100 Puncte Parker, în 2017 el a realizat o performanță rară, ocupând două poziții în Top 100 al Wine Spectator: locul 5 cu Gigondas 2015 și locul 31 cu Forge Cellars Classique Riesling 2015.
De o energie și volubilitate debordante, Louis este un vorbitor la fel de savuros ca vinurile sale. Pasionat de rugby și muzica clasică, el intrigă și incită, iar prezentările lui sunt un spectacol captivant și erudit.
